HOMEWORK PLAN

For several years we have used a monthly plan for homework in grade 3. We have had great success with this format due to the fact that it is a flexible program that easily fits into student and family life. Each month your child will receive a homework packet.  Homework should be worked on throughout the month and then returned to school on the date that is specified on the front of the packet.  Following are our goals for student homework. Homework throughout the year will have an emphasis on reading as well as connections to the Investigations math program.

Goals of 3rd Grade Homework

  • To provide students with the practice that is necessary to maintain skills taught in school.
  • To teach children the importance of developing study skills.  These skills include planning for a quiet study time and space, having materials ready, completing work and returning it to school when due.
  • To encourage families to play an active role in their child’s academic development.
  • To provide flexibility to students and families by not requiring a specific assignment to be completed on a specific night. Using this format students can decide what schedule works best for them when it comes to completing homework.
  • To provide students with many opportunities for success within the homework program.

We encourage you to review the homework packet with your child each month. We have gone over the packet at school, yet we also hope that you will play an active role in your child’s endeavors.  As the year progresses you should see your child become much more independent in regard to homework completion.  Some activities involve family participation; this is a great opportunity for you to celebrate your child’s academic strengths and to support areas that need more attention. It is our philosophy to not give additional homework beyond the monthly packets.  We hope that you will help your child pace him/herself and spread the packet out over the month.  In reality some students do a lot early, some do a lot late; we suggest that students do a bit at a time.  You need to decide what works best for your child.  We encourage students to spend time reading, studying basic math facts and spending time enjoying hobbies and family activities beyond the regular homework.  No homework plan is always perfect for every child. We are happy to make accomodations for individuals as necessary, please don't heistiate to contact us about your child's needs.

Kathy Christy's Brief Biography

I have been teaching elementary school for 28 years, 21 of them have been at East Montpelier Elementary!  I have taught grades 2-6 in various configurations and settings. Many years ago I received my BS in Elementary Education from Keene State College.  I received  my M.Ed. in Educational Supervision from Trinity College of Vermont.  In 2000 I achieved National Board Certification from the National Board For Professional Teaching Standards.  I live in Barre, Vermont with my husband Dave, a PGA golf professional.  Dave works for the New England PGA as the Operations Manager for Vermont. As a native Vermonter, I grew up in Woodstock, VT. I am the youngest of six children, four of us are teachers!  I enjoy spending time with my extended family, traveling, reading, walking the roads of Central Vermont, beach vacations, going to Jazzercise classes, volunteering at CVMC and playing golf (poorly!) with my husband.

Favorite websites: I recommend these sites as interactive sites for students to explore.  As always I recommend that students work on the internet with an adult nearby!
