Second Grade Homework

Goals of Second Grade Homework For several years we have used a monthly packet for homework in the second grade. Each month your child will receive a homework packet. Homework should be worked on throughout the month and then returned to school on the date that is specified on the front of the packet. As students complete a square it should be colored in on the front page. It is fun for kids to color in the squares using a pattern or design.
To provide students with the practice that is necessary to maintain skills taught in school.
- To teach children the importance of developing study skills. These ideas include planning for a quiet study time and space, having materials ready, completing work and then returning it to school when completed.
- To encourage families to play an active role in their child’s academic development.
- To provide flexibility to students and families by not requiring a specific assignment to be completed on a specific night so that individual family needs can be respected. This way families can decided what days work best for then when it comes to planning for homework.
- To provide students with many opportunities for success within the homework program.
We encourage you to review the homework packet with your child. We have gone over it with them at school, but we do expect that you will play an active role in your child’s first endeavors. As the year progresses you should see your child becoming more independent in regard to homework completion. Some activities involve family participation; this is a great opportunity for you to celebrate your child’s academic strengths and to support areas that need more attention. It is our philosophy to not give additional homework beyond the monthly packets. We hope that you will help your child pace him/herself and spread the packet out over the month. In reality some students do a lot early, some do a lot late; we suggest that students do a bit at a time. You need to decide what works best for your child. We encourage students to spend time reading, studying basic math facts and spending time enjoying hobbies and family activities for additional homework.
